ABSTRACT

The treatment of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) can be divided into primary prevention, secondary prevention and treatment of AD itself (Figure 17.1). Treatments can also be divided according to the goal – symptomatic improvement, modulatory and treatments to prevent progression and treatment of behavioural symptoms. A further classification would be medication vs non-pharmacological therapies (including specific therapeutic interventions for the individual, counselling, support for the caregiver and education). In this chapter we will focus on primary prevention and secondary prevention management, all three forms of therapies and both pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies. Behavioural

symptoms are less common in the very early AD stages and will not be addressed.
