It is important to remember that everything that occurs in people with dementia is not necessarily due to dementia. Most people with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) are elderly and are therefore likely to suffer from other significant illnesses, both acute and chronic. One prospective study1 of 200 elderly outpatients with dementia identified 248 other medical diagnoses in 124 patients; 92 of the diagnoses were new.
