ABSTRACT
Modern ultrafiltration (UF) membranes have their origins in the 1950s when commercially
viable reverse-osmosis (RO) membranes were developed for water desalination
(Michaels, 1986). The Loeb and Sourirajan’s phase inversion process created the first
highly anisotropic membranes, which is the basis of UF membranes used today.
