ABSTRACT

Protocols for microbiological monitoring and control of manufacturing have been established for categories of products regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration. The unique product forms and packages distinct to cosmetic products are often accompanied by implements of various conformations and compositions. Cosmetic products are distributed and marketed without refrigeration or shelf-life controls. Hazard analysis critical control point (HACCP) is a program for monitoring manufacturing processes to identify potential microbial contamination hazards and ensure the integrity of overall systems. The ultimate benefit of implementing HAACP is monetary because the program serves as a primary means to avoid microbiological contamination problems that can bring a business to a screeching halt. Cosmetic products are unique in the diversity of formulations, forms, packaging, distribution, and consumer use. With effectively preserved materials, cosmetic HACCP programs provide the ultimate ways to provide microbial quality assurance.
