The cortex of the adrenal gland develops from mesoderm, while the medulla develops from neuroectoderm. The cortex first appears adjacent to the root of the dorsal mesentery during the sixth week of gestation. During the seventh week, cells from the adjacent sympathetic ganglia migrate to and are gradually encapsulated by the cortex, forming the adrenal gland.
