ABSTRACT

Kyphoplasty is a technique that involves the insertion of an inflatable balloon tamp into the vertebral body to create a bone void and potentially restore height. Cement is then injected under low pressure into the void to provide longstanding mechanical stabilization. Many clinical studies have shown this to be a safe and effective method of treatment for symptomatic osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. Physical examination is a key component of preoperative planning prior to kyphoplasty. Back pain, particularly low back pain, in the elderly population, has a broad differential diagnosis, including spinal stenosis, facet-mediated pain, herniated discs, and degenerative disc disease.
