ABSTRACT

Rhinosinusitis is characterized by inflammatory changes to the mucous membranes, the bone, or the fluid contents of the paranasal sinuses. Although the definition, diagnosis, and management of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) has been under debate and scrutiny over the past several years, there is a central, innate fact regarding this disease that is unequivocal: adequate visualization of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses is, at best, difficult for the majority of physicians who treat this disease. A more complete assessment and understanding of the area of pathology-the mucosalized surfaces of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinusesthrough nasal endoscopy provides the examiner with information that is essential to the diagnosis and management of CRS.
