ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Perioperative myocardial injury is a major cause of morbidity and mortality after noncardiac surgery (1,2). Unfortunately, the etiology and mechanism(s) of perioperative myocardial injury remain an area of uncertainty and the subject of continued debate and controversy (3-6). However, without knowledge of the causes of perioperative myocardial injury, the design of effective preventive measures to improve perioperative outcome is impossible.
