INTRODUCTION

Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is frequently

associated with neurological complications involving both the central and

peripheral nervous system. Among these, HIV-1-associated dementia (HAD) is

the most common sequela affecting the central nervous system (CNS). Before

focusing on HAD, we will briefly review HIV infection epidemiology, viral

cycle, and treatment.
