INTRODUCTION
Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is frequently
associated with neurological complications involving both the central and
peripheral nervous system. Among these, HIV-1-associated dementia (HAD) is
the most common sequela affecting the central nervous system (CNS). Before
focusing on HAD, we will briefly review HIV infection epidemiology, viral
cycle, and treatment.
