ABSTRACT

Man’s awe of the miracle of procreation has led him to worship the agents he thought were responsible for life. For ancient peoples, the power to create life was magical and provided a sense of protection. Hence, man fashioned images of the organs of procreation to worship as powerful protectors against death and destruction. Phallic monuments, emblems, festivals, and decorative motifs are found in all parts of the world. Mythologies of all races have elements that are both symbolically and literally phallic in content.
