ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Hydrocephalus complicates myelomeningocele in approximately 85% to 90% of patients (1); once the myelomeningocele is closed, the surgical management of hydrocephalus is the cornerstone of ongoing neurosurgical care. Hydrocephalus in the patient with a myelomeningocele presents a number of unusual problems in management that can challenge even the most seasoned clinician. We will review the pathophysiology and presenting features of hydrocephalus in patients with myelomeningocele, and discuss the management of hydrocephalus and shunt complications in this complex disorder.
