ABSTRACT

Surgical management of diseases of the esophagus can be challenging for the pediatric surgeon. Successful management of esophageal problems requires knowledge of cervical, thoracic, and abdominal anatomy. In addition, the surgeon must be aware of functional abnormalities of the esophagus and stomach. Knowledge of potential complications due to technical problems and associated anomalies will allow the pediatric surgeon to anticipate and avoid these problems. In the following chapter, complications related to the treatment of esophageal atresia (EA), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and esophageal replacement will be presented.
