ABSTRACT

The development of pediatric expertise within regional trauma systems has led to advances in triage and transport of seriously injured children to facilities prepared for the unique challenges of these patients (1). Despite these advances, many serious and often life-threatening complications of both the host response to injury and the treatment rendered can occur. We will focus on specific treatment-related complications of common abdominal and orthopedic injuries. Complex critical care issues such asmulti-system organ failure, “adult” respiratory distress syndrome, systemic inflammatory response syndrome, and neurotrauma complications are beyond the scope of this chapter (2).
