ABSTRACT

Genetic counseling in women’s health care was initially applied, in large part, to the counseling of women and couples pregnant or considering pregnancy, and who either had a previous affected pregnancy or a personal or family history of a genetic condition. Genetic counseling was offered to assess the risk of recurrence (in the case of an affected previous pregnancy) or occurrence (in the case of a positive personal or family history) of that condition in the current or a subsequent pregnancy. This comprised the total information that such couples could obtain prior to the birth of their child.
