ABSTRACT

Advances in genetics and prenatal diagnosis have increased our understanding of anatomic, physiologic, and molecular disorders of the fetus. This has enabled researchers to pursue the ultimate goal of treating fetal disorders in utero in order to optimize neonatal health. This chapter will deal with the medical treatments of the fetus currently in practice and those with potential, including genetic disorders and medical disorders of the fetus. Surgical therapies and ethical considerations surrounding prenatal treatments are discussed elsewhere in this text.
