ABSTRACT

Moore (1) first differentiated gastroschisis from omphalocele in 1953. It is defined as an abdominal wall defect that involves herniation of gut and occasionally spleen, liver, or genitourinary tract. It occurs mostly to the right side of the umbilicus and is characterized by the absence of membrane covering the prolapsed organs,

the loops of gut floating in the amniotic fluid. Thanks to sonographic scan, it is a common prenatally diagnosed condition, with a diagnostic rate about 95%.
