ABSTRACT

Infections represent a major cause of illness and death worldwide. In the last few decades, important advances have been made in the development of potent and safe antimicrobial agents. The end of the ‘‘infection era’’ seemed to be closer than ever. Nevertheless, as new and powerful antibiotics are developed, microbes develop the ability to resist these drugs and to attack with new survival strategies. Therefore, instead of being eradicated, infectious processes become more varied and more difficult to diagnose and treat (1).
