ABSTRACT

Brain death is often perceived as the tragic end to the life of a loved one, and sometimes as a medical failure. However, the prospect of organ donation can refocus the grief emanating from an otherwise devastating event toward the greater good of extending the life of another patient who would otherwise also die. Indeed, the gift of organs provides tremendous benefits to the recipient, but also honors the departed patients, and assuages some of the grief experienced by the family and friends of the donor.
