ABSTRACT

Health is a difficult entity to evaluate and this particularly holds true for venous disease.

There is a lack of precise classification for venous disease and, as a consequence, an

underestimate of the impact on the health economy of a nation. Using The International

Classification of Disease (ICD-9), venous disease includes categories numbers 454

(varicose veins of the lower extremities), 459 (venous insufficiency and postphlebitic

syndrome), and 451 (phlebitis and thrombophlebitis).
