ABSTRACT
Megacolon may result from a variety of clinical conditions and can be classified as two major categories-acute or chronic. Acute megacolon may be due to distal obstruction, metabolic disturbances, or inflammatory disorders of the bowel. This chapter will only discuss chronic causes of megacolon (Table 1).
