ABSTRACT

Volvulus refers to a torsion or twist of an organ on a pedicle. In the gastrointestinal tract, it can involve the stomach, spleen, gallbladder, small bowel, or large bowel (1), but it is by far most likely to occur in the colon. Clinically, there are differences in presentation and treatment depending on grade of obstruction (partial, complete) and the segment involved. Furthermore, colonic volvulus can be classified as common (sigmoid, cecum) or uncommon (splenic flexure, transverse colon). Sigmoid volvulus is most common and accounts for more than 75% of all cases reported (2).
