ABSTRACT
Interest in perfluorocarbon liquids, as a means to ventilate the lung, grew
out of Leland Clark’s discovery that mice can breathe these oxygen solvents without mechanical assistance (1). But perfluorocarbon liquids may prove
most valuable to patients with respiratory failure because of their unantici-
pated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
