ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignancy in humans. According to the American Cancer Society, there will be more than one million new cases of skin cancer this year. Eighty percent of the cases of nonmelanoma skin cancers are BCC. While nevoid BCC syndrome left evidence of its existence in mummified Egyptian skeletons nearly 4000 years ago, BCC was not described as a unique entity until 1827. Other names for BCC include Jacob’s ulcer, rodent ulcer, trichoma, and basalioma.
