I. Introduction

The principles of atomization are central to two of the major categories of pharmaceutical aerosol products, pressurized metered dose inhalers and nebulizers. There have been major developments in each of these technologies (Chapter 15) over the last decade, but the basic principles have not changed and remain fundamental to understanding mechanisms of droplet formation from these devices.
