ABSTRACT

The main goals of renal transplantation in children with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are to improve long-term patient and graft survival, quality of life, and optimize growth and development. Currently 52% of all children in North America undergoing renal transplantation receive a kidney from a live donor [North American Pediatric Renal Transplant Cooperative Study (NAPRTCS)] (1), and children under five years of age are more likely to receive living donor kidneys.
