KEY POINTS ■ For primary prevention of cardiovascular disease, 500 mg/day of EPA + DHA is recommended,

primarily via diet (consumption of two servings of fatty fish per week is advised). For secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, 1 g/day is recommended. For triglyceride lowering, 2-4 g/day is indicated. Physician oversight is recommended for the latter two patient cohorts. Fish oil supplements will be necessary for triglyceride lowering and may be needed for secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease.
