KEY POINTS ■ Waist circumference (WC) measured perpendicular to the floor at the level of the iliac crest in

expiration is a practical way to estimate the state of abdominal or visceral fat. In the INTERHEART study, waist/hip ratio showed a graded and highly significant association with risk of myocardial infarction in contrast to body mass index (BMI), which had a weaker and less consistent relationship across ethnic and other subgroups.
