ABSTRACT

This chapter offers providers the core competencies necessary for understanding and treating racial/ethnic minority elders within a sociocultural context. Cultural differences in health beliefs and practices as well as disparities in the health status and health care of our racial/ethnic minority elders are prevalent and must be understood and addressed in order to care for the population in a compassionate, cost-effective manner. The chapter provides a framework for health-care providers to understand issues relevant to the care of racial/ethnic minority elders with diabetes. Racial/ethnic minority elders with diabetes have a greater burden of disease than whites due to higher incidence and prevalence rates as well as worse diabetes health outcomes, including glycemic control, comorbid conditions, and complications. The chapter highlights some of the cultural issues that may impact elderly minority patients with diabetes. Many non-Western cultures utilize storytelling as a means to communicate cultural norms, pass on cultural wisdom, and assist the community in achieving wellness and harmony.
