ABSTRACT
Preservative efficacy testing, also referred to as challenge testing, is performed on aqueous cosmetic products and on over-the-counter drug products, and pharmaceutical products to ensure that these products are adequately preserved to withstand possible contamination during manufacturing or during regular consumer use. Formulation chemists also use this testing tool during product development to determine the minimum levels of preservatives to be used for adequate control of contamination.
