ABSTRACT

Primary parasomnias are reported to occur during both rapid eye movement (REM) and non-rapid eyemovement (NREM) sleep. Themost common examples ofNREMparasomnias are the disorders of arousal-confusional arousal, sleep terrors, and sleepwalking (1) (see chaps. 36 and 38). Themost commonREM sleep parasomnia is REM sleep behavior disorder (see chaps. 36 and 38) (2,3). The diagnostic evaluation and tools differ between these two types of parasomnias. This chapter will discuss the differing approaches and tools available for their diagnosis.
