ABSTRACT

Communication is the exchange of information between individuals by means of speech, writing, or a common system of signs and gestures. The development of this complex system of communication has helped humans survive, express ideas, and emotions, and negotiate with one another. In mechanically ventilated (MV) patients, the ability to relate to others on a day-to-day basis is profoundly limited if communication needs are not addressed (1). Even the most basic communication needs include the ability to request, refuse, interact socially, and exchange information (2).
