ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Cognitively impaired individuals may encounter a variety of serious problems in the course of obtaining appropriate medical care for both their cognitive medical conditions and medical issues they may have that are wholly unconnected to their cognitive impairments (1). These problems may include difficulties in making appointments, remembering appointments, and getting lost en route to appointments. They include failing to fill prescriptions, forgetting to take medications, or taking an excess of medications. Cognitively impaired elderly people may also ignore important symptoms with the result that their most significant problems may not be treated (2).
