ABSTRACT

The vitreous is a fascinating and unique structure composed of extracellular matrix (ECM) and very few cells. Despite its accessibility and large volume, many aspects of its biochemistry, physiology, and pathobiology have proved difficult to unravel. The vitreous is highly hydrated, composed of approximately 99% water, and its macromolecular components include collagen, glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), proteoglycans, glycoproteins, and other proteins (8).
