ABSTRACT

Most fair-skinned populations worldwide have experienced a marked increase in

the incidence of melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancers since the early 1970s.

Personal sun exposure habits, in particular, frequent travel to sunny destinations

and the active seeking of a suntan as an expression of being healthy and beautiful,

constitute the most important risk factor for UV radiation damage. Consequently,

skin cancer is largely preventable when appropriate sun-protection measures are

taken. As UV radiation cannot be seen or felt, it is important to visualize the level

of danger and to alert people on a daily basis to take prompt, appropriate action to

protect themselves.
