ABSTRACT

Physical Examination Initial abdominal findings may be subtle but often evolve over several hours. Surface abrasions, contusions, ecchymosis, and hematomas are nonspecific but could be indicative of potential underlying damage. Guarding and tenderness are helpful when present but may be masked by distracting injuries or diminished level of consciousness. As physical findings are inaccurate in diagnosing pancreatic injuries, imaging by Focused Assessment for the Sonography of Trauma (FAST) exam and/or CT scanning are indicated as soon as the patient’s condition allows.
