ABSTRACT

Chronic perineal pain has not beenwell described in the literature. This chronic pain is disabling and can have severe psychological repercussions, which constitute the major presenting complaint and which may be a source of confusion concerning the diagnosis. However, characteristic clinical features can be described. Clinical experience is consequently more instructive than evidence-based medicine in this context. A pathophysiological mechanism needs to be proposed, even if it cannot be validated, in order to provide the patient with an explanation and to ensure coherent treatment.
