ABSTRACT

Improvements in the solubility, dissolution rate and absorption properties of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) remain challenging aspects in the development of pharmaceutical products. New drug delivery technology development therefore focuses on enhancing the bioavailability of the API, overcoming solubility barriers throughout the body and on the provision of an optimum release profile for the API so as to control the duration of action in the body and to reduce side effects. These considerations are important for the development of formulations for new chemical entities and in improving the formulations of established products for the purposes of product life-cycle management.
