INTRODUCTION Mood disorders are common in the elderly and include depressive and manic conditions. Major depression has been reported to occur in 1% to 3% of the general elderly population (1-5). Estimates of the prevalence of geriatric mania in treatment populations range from 5% to 19%, but reliable community-based rates are not known (6).
