ABSTRACT

Death is the only certainty in life. Doctors should allow their patients to make the most

out of living but not to fight dying. It is the job of the physician to guide his or her

patients’ health as long as a measure of happiness is achievable, and to make their passing

comfortable and dignified when death is near and unavoidable (1). After all, life is

measured by the richness of its experiences rather than by the length of its days. It is not a

great achievement to prolong the years of mindless existence in a state deemed by the

patient to be a fate worse than death (2). Research should focus on reducing suffering and

prolonging life worth living.
