ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Oral modified-release (MR) formulation is designed to deliver the drug to the body at a predetermined rate or site in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Oral MR includes, for example, extended-, controlled-, prolonged-, sustained-, delayed-, and pulsatile-release formulations. The focus of this chapter is formulations providing a slower drug release compared with conventional immediate-release (IR) formulations and the term extended release (ER) will be used to refer to these formulations.
