ABSTRACT

CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF BROMINE Bromine (CAS No. 7726-95-6) is a naturally-occurring, highly-reactive element found in the earth’s crust and oceans in which seawater concentrations are, approximately, 65 parts per million (ppm) (1). In its pure form, bromine is a reddish-brown liquid; however, because of its reactivity, bromine is normally found as a bromine-containing mineral or inorganic bromide. At room temperature and pressure, elementary bromine readily volatilizes to a reddish-brown vapor that possesses a pungent bleach-like smell. The odor threshold has been reported to range from 0.05 to 3.5 ppm (https://www.cdc.gov/NIOSH/pdfs/ 0064.pdf). Specific physical and chemical properties are shown in Table 1.
