ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that can result in chronic impairments and disabilities. When compared to other, more common, mental disorders such as depression or anxiety disorders, schizophrenia is relatively rare (1). Nevertheless, schizophrenia is among the most burdensome and costly illnesses worldwide (2). The “Global Burden of Disease” study showed that schizophrenia is one of the major contributors to the overall burden of disease (3).
