ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION As described in the U.S. Pharmacopeia, USP-32/NF-27 (1), an injection is a preparation intended for parenteral administration and/or for constituting or diluting a parenteral article prior to administration. It is administered through the skin or other external boundary tissue, rather than through the alimentary canal, so that therapeutic substances, using gravity or force, can gain direct entry to a blood vessel, organ, tissue, or lesion. Parenteral products are required to meet pharmacopeial requirements for sterility, pyrogens, particulate matter, and other contaminants, and, where appropriate, contain inhibitors of the growth of microorganisms.
