ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION AND OVERVIEW Fibromyalgia (FM) has been recently described as “a common, poorly understood condition with limited treatment options” (1). Thus, it is no surprise that nonpharmacological treatments, including complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), are common choices for FM patients looking at ways to manage their condition. The following (chapter 4) will provide an overview of these treatment options, including prevalence, patient rationale for utilization and clinical efficacy. Most importantly, as many of these choices are accessed without the input of a clinician, the chapter hopes to provide guidance regarding the discussion and coordination of care for these treatments. This chapter will not focus on the use of traditional exercise or psychological interventions that are covered elsewhere in the book.
