ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION The ASA (American Society of Anesthesiologists) standards of monitoring require the presence of a qualifi ed anesthesia provider as well as the continual evaluation of a patient’s oxygenation, ventilation, circulation, and temperature (1) . These standards apply to all patients who are undergoing an anesthetic. Although obesity is associated with a greater number of comorbidities, the presence of obesity, in and of itself, is not an indication for additional monitoring (2) . This chapter will address some of the unique considerations that apply to obese patients for intraoperative and postoperative monitoring.
