ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION Blood is a complex liquid organ that provides for transport of metabolic fuels and wastes, host defense, cell-to-cell signaling, and coagulation. Obesity causes important pro-infl ammatory and pro-thrombotic changes in the blood and may also cause changes in red cell mass and platelet activation. Awareness of obesity related hematological considerations is important to optimize patient care in the perioperative period.
