ABSTRACT
Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is an aggressive malignant tumor of serosal surfaces. It most commonly affects the pleura, but also involves peritoneal and occasionally other serosal surfaces. It was considered a rare disease before about 1960, but has increased dramatically in incidence since that time, almost certainly owing to the widespread use of asbestos fibers in the postwar industrial boom.
