ABSTRACT

I. Background Lung transplantation may be the only hope for survival in most patients with end-stage lung disease (ESLD). The challenges inherent to lung transplantation are shortage of available donor organs, primary graft dysfunction, rejection, infection, and perioperative strategies including technical issues and critical care. While both bilateral and singlelung transplants are widely used in a variety of ESLD, single-lung transplantation may be the mostefficient means of transplanting a suitable donor (1). This chapter describes the history, technique, and outcomes of single-lung transplantation.
