ABSTRACT
Carotid artery disease is one of the major causes of ischemic stroke.1,2 The predominant mechanisms by which it causes stroke are:
• arterial embolism from atherosclerotic plaques
• hemodynamic changes, leading to ‘watershed’ infarcts
• distal propagation of thrombus originating from acute carotid occlusion.3
