ABSTRACT

Two studies have looked at the incidence of symptoms in college students In the United states; Nygaard et al. reported that 7% of women admitted to urine loss only during sports, and that 40% and 17% first noted UI during sport while in high school or junior high school, respectively (5) . The second study had a low response rate which highlighted the difficulty of carrying out epidemiology studies on this subject. Of the 18 schools and colleges approached only two colleges and one high school completed and returned surveys. One principal refused to distribute the surveys after angry phone calls from parents. Although 550 surveys were provided to agreeing participants, only 171 were distributed to athletes of which 86 were returned completed. Of the completing surveys 28% reported SUI symptoms, with more than 91% of the

respondents having never heard of pelvic floor muscle exercises (PFME). The author concluded that student athletes require more education on the matter (14) .
